GCC unveils LRC LEED Gold designation Guam Community College press lease August 17, 2011

Guam Community College today unveiled the beautiful glass plaque designating its Learning resource Center as LEED Gold certified by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). TheGreen Building Certification Institute (GBCI) also has verified GCCs LEED Gold designation. We are thrilled and a bit surprised by the Gold designation, Dr. Mary Okada, GCC President,told students, GCC personnel, and contractors gathered in the atrium of the LRC this morning. This has been a true team effort on the part of many people. We were expecting a Silverdesignation, but we are excited to learn that our new building has gold sustainability features. The two-story, 22,000 square foot Learning Resource Center opened in December 2010,boasting LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, features such as photovoltaic solar panels, digital temperature controls, energy efficient windows and lighting,and furniture made of recyclable materials.Michael Makio, AIA, Principal, Taniguchi Ruth Makio Architects, designed the $4.3 million facility. He told the crowd that LEED certification is a very demanding process, but one that isimportant for the island of Guam.We live in a perfect place to practice what we preach, Makio said of being environmentally sustainable. We dont have the resources available that they do on the mainland, so we have toprotect what we have. Makio pointed out that even the asphalt in the LRC parking lot is recycled. Very little of the debris created during the construction of this building ended up inthe landfill, he said.Makio thanked his staff sustainability team of Dr. Barbara Cushing, DArch, Cedric Cruz and Rafael Chavez, and contractors EMC2 Mechanical, EMCE Electrical, Duenas Camacho &Associates, and Guam Sustainability Solutions, as well as the buildings principal contractor, Asanuma Corporation, for their considerable efforts in obtaining the LEED Gold designation forthe LRC.Lorilee Crisostomo, administrator of the Guam Energy Office, thanked Dr. Okada for being proactive with the ARRA money that helped to fund some of the buildings sustainability features. She pointed out that the LRC is Guams first public building to be designated as LEEDGold.LEED is a program created by USGBC to recognize outstanding efforts in the design, construction and operation of high-performance, environmentally friendly buildings. USGBChas four levels of LEED certification: basic, silver, gold, and platinum. GCCs LEED Gold designation is one of several ongoing sustainability efforts under way at the College. Othersinclude the photovoltaic solar panels on the Anthony A. Leon Guerrero Allied Health Center, which helped designate GCC as the islands largest civilian producer of renewable energy,photovoltaic lighting in GCCs parking lots, and a recent grant for sustainable furniture for the new Student Center, scheduled to open this December.

Taniguchi Ruth Makio Architects previously Taniguchi Ruth Architects is a professional Architectural firm staffed by 20 persons whose experience encompasses design and management of a wide diversity of private sector and public projects for Guam, the CNMI, and Palau. The Firm has built a strong reputation in the planning and design of facilities in Micronesia in the past 35 years. TRMA was established in 1973 by founding partner, Kinya Taniguchi, AIA. He was joined by H. Mark Ruth, FAIA in 1978, and Michael Makio, AIA, in 1987. Mark Ruth's background covers forty years of experience in planning and architecture and he holds a Master degree in Urban Design. He has resided on Guam since 1968 during which time he has been involved in a variety of institutional, air terminal, school, correctional, commercial, hotel and resort planning, and landscape projects. In addition to design, planning and technical skills, he has a strong background in project organization, administration and management. He is a member of the construction industry panel of the American Arbitration Association and is a trained mediator.He is two-times past president of the American Institute of Architects, Guam and Micronesia Chapter and was made a Fellow of the institute in 1994 in recognition of his leadership and contribution to the profession. Mr. Ruth is a founding Board Member for the Isla Center for the Arts at the University of Guam.

Michael Makio AIA Michael Makio, AIAPRINCIPAL
Michael Makio is a Guam and Hawaii native and with extensive experience in managing design and construction. Michael leads the Marketing effort and the firm's Interior group and has long term clients for academic and industrial facilities such as Guam International Airport Authority, St. John's Episcopal School, Harvest Christian Academy, and Guam Community College for over twelve years.Since joining the firm in 1987, he has worked on a variety of commercial, academic and resort projects. Michael designs, manages construction documents preparation and administers construction contracts of gymnasiums, campus master plans, food and beverage facilities and industrial projects. Michael oversees all phases of project delivery and his designs have been built on Guam, Hawaii, the CNMI, and Hong Kong.

Allen Turner Allen TurnerSENIOR ASSOCIATE / SENIOR PROJECT MANAGER
Allen Turner is responsible for Project Management and Construction Administration services provided by the firm. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Construction Management and has thirty-five years experience in construction, design and project management. This experience encompasses the many phases of a project from conception and development, bid and contract document development, construction through owner occupancy.His practical experience includes involvement in major projects such as residential subdivisions, commercial property development, numerous highway and bridge projects, wastewater treatment plants, airport emergency facilities, medical facilities, institutional facilities, recreational facilities and commercial facilities.To ensure the quality construction of the firm's major projects, Mr. Turner has developed and implemented a computerized system of project control and scheduling. A staff of technical and administrative assistants supports him.He is a member of the Guam Chamber of Commerce Armed Forces Committee, National Contract Management Association (President 2003-2005)(NCMA), Society of American Military Engineers (Treasurer 2003/2004 and 2005/2006, Executive Committee 2004/2005)(SAME) and Committee to Get Guam Working (Chairman 2004/2005). He is currently an associate board member of the Guam Contractor's Association and Board Liaison/Chairman of the Chapter Activities and Community Professional Affairs Committee.

Melet Santos Melet SantosSENIOR ASSOCIATE
Melet Santos joined TRMA in 1988 where she has gained a diversified experience in planning, design development, construction documents, contract administration and institutional planning. Her projects range from planning, healthcare and hospital facilities sports facilities, and tourism related commercial complexes.Melet is a member of the American Institute of Architects Guam and Micronesia Chapter and has served as an associate member of the Board of Directors. She is currently the Scholarship Chairperson, a position she has held since 2004. She was involved wih the 4-H Architecture Club to assist youths in developing their interest in the field of architecture.Melet's thesis project was a water development for Hagatna that included commercial revialization and preservation of natural features, cultural and historical resources.

Richard N Cody AIA Richard N. Cody, AIASENIOR ASSOCIATE / PRINCIPAL CNMI
Richard Cody's background covers over thirty-five years of varied experience in all phases of architectural practice in both the private and public sectors. He has resided on Saipan for thirty years. His experience includes project management, design and construction administration for a variety of project types of various sizes including health care, education, corrections, air transportation, military, resort and private sector projects.In addition to architectural services, he has considerable experience in developing project feasibility, coordination of user requirements, initial project programming and planning, and bringing together multiple project collaborators. Mr. Cody is a former chairman of the CNMI Board of Professional Licensing, Chairman of numerous A/E Evaluation Committees and Contracting Officer of eleven federally funded construction projects. He is current President of the Guam and Micronesia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

A 48,896 square foot , 3 storey branch headquarters. Including parking, infrastructure, landscaping and covered walkways. The facility is a concrete composition including several sustainable designs. Features including, but not limited to, sun shade devices, rain water catchment systems, green roofs, high albedo roofs, recycled and regional materials etc.Structural, mechanical, electrical and all material finishes are included in the scope of work as well as additional commissioning measures related to LEED certification.

DLM BUILDING

Guam Department of Land Management (DLM) Building

HAGATNA, GUAM

The New Department of Land Management Building is located in Hagatna. The scope of work involves the construction of a 5 storey building approximately 50,000 square foot facility with an attached parking garage. The first two floor levels have an exterior tile cladding façade for aesthetic reasons as well as serve a purpose that is to prevent vandalism from being permanent. Other aesthetic façade features include landscaping, latte stone images throughout the building high-rise and awnings at the first floor levels to serve as shading. LEED certification is being incorporated into the program. Photovoltaic panels on the roof top to include solar power source, inclusion of photovoltaic street lights, and a roof garden to reduce the heat gain from the roof top are possibilities being studied integrated into the design program.Currently, archaeological services per SHPO Requirements are being done, as well as an environmental assessment and archaeological traffic analysis.

The project primarily consists of a pre-cast structure and metal roof structure of approximately 63,000 sq-ft housing a variety of athletic and recreational facilities including racquetball courts, free weights areas, basketball courts, offices, classrooms, storage, wellness and physical fitness evaluation, health and nutrition training spaces, restrooms, locker rooms, break rooms and all required electrical fire protection, mechanical, plumbing, civil and structural systems. The facility is one of a series of facilities planned for Air Force personnel and their families and aesthetically is designed to match the Mediterranean colors and motifs designed into the first facility.

The project consists of a new 25,000 sq-ft two-story concrete building that will house the school's Medical Assisting and Nursing programs.This facility includes six instructional classrooms each linked to a laboratory classroom setting, instructor's office and storage. The facility also includes two lecture halls and a computer classroom.The rooms are designed to accommodate audio and visual presentations including video conferencing and other internet/computer technology meeting formats. The space will also be used for displays of exhibits for the campus.Presently under construction and programmed to be complete in 2009 .

GCC LEARNING RESOURCE CENTER

Guam Community College Learning Resource Center

MANGILAO, GUAM

The 20,000 square feet New Learning Resource Center Building is located on the Guam Community College campus in the village of Mangilao. The design of the spaces will be more inclined to the contemporary concept that college curricula are based on collaborative and group projects and less emphasis is placed on traditional individual study settings. The facility also comprises of stainable design and construction and will be evaluated by the US Green Building Council through fulfillment of a LEED Rating for the project. The projects goal is to achieve a Gold or Silver LEED certification. Sustainable design techniques that were employed at the Center consists of the on-site renewable energy with a photovoltaic system, as well as other techniques including direct digital control, automated lighting system, water efficient fixtures and Low-E glazing. Low-emitting materials were also used, including paints, carpets and adhesives. Existing site materials, such as asphalt, are to be recycled to minimize the amount of debris disposed in the islands landfill. To maximize this effort, recycled bins are stored on-site for a variety of other materials. Native plants were used in the landscaping to reduce the need for landscape irrigation. In support of a sustainable campus, the College has also created a Sustainable Design Principles course that will be integrated into the curriculum.The project includes site improvements, utility connections, connecting walkways, civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical systems. The facility also consists of the main entry through a double height rotunda space with Circulation/Service areas. The main stairway within the rotunda offers immediate access upstairs while still maintaining an open atmosphere within the Circulation/Service areas. The facility also includes the Reference and Periodical Areas, Computer Workstations, Computer Lab and Library Instruction Spaces, Open Seating/Study Areas, Small Group Study Rooms, Audio/Visual Room & Media Room, Book Stack Area, support rooms. The contract amount for this project is $4,273,100.00.

MANGILAO, GUAM

The Student Center building is located within the Guam Community College campus in Mangilao, Guam. The two storey building is approximately 21,300 square feet, which comprises of approximately 16,500 square feet of interior space and approximately 4,800 square feet of covered walkways and circulation areas. The three-tiered open Courtyard fronting the building with built-in seating is approximately 6,300 square feet that will compliment the need for a break-out group setting environment. The design of the spaces was generated through collaborative efforts between the faculties, students, and designers. The facility provides student support programs, services, and activities consistent with its mission that promote student learning and enhance the development of its students that include academic support services, academic advising, admissions, career services, center for civic engagement and student success, computer lab, counseling, tutoring, financial aid, student lounge, and the student Nurses offices, screening and isolation rooms with complete toilet and shower rooms.

GUAM INTERNATIONAL AIR TERMINAL
In association with Gensler and Associates, TRMA provided design consultation on materials and local conditions, and contract administration services for construction of the new Guam International Air Terminal Expansion. Phase I is this 750,000 sq-ft expansion was completed in 1996.This project is comprised of 9 separate construction packages including earthwork and foundations, structural steel, general construction, inbound and outbound baggage systems, loading bridges, flight/baggage information systems, furniture and artwork.TRMA continues to provide design services for Food Court, TSA Offices, and Warehouse Facilities, Restroom Renovation and Upgrades.

GUAM MEMORIAL HOSPITAL
From 1986 through 2006 TRMA Worked with the Guam Memorial Hospital authority on a comprehensive CIP program to upgrade the hospital to meet code and safety standards, and toe better serve the needs of the growing community. Working with Rex Whitaker Allen, FAIA we developed an expansion program to increase the number of beds from 150 to 184, and to provide new and expanded medical ancillary services. TRA was responsible for the following work: • New Maternity/ Nursery Wing • New Administration Offices• Expanded Cafeteria Dietary • New Hemodialysis Unit• New Physical Therapy Dept. • New Medical Records Debt.• New Admissions Dept. and Gift Shop • Remodeled Skilled Nursing Unit• Upgraded Nurse Stations • Upgraded Pediatrics Unit• Expanded Laboratory • Remodeled Radiology Dept.• New Medical Examiners Offices • Remodeled Morgue• New General Storage and Shops • Upgraded Life Safety Systems • Redesign of Patient Rooms • Enclosure of open stairways and courtyard infills As a result of this CIP program the facility was brought into full compliance with the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code and the standards of the Joint Commission on Accreditation for Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO)

HOTEL NIKKO CHAPEL
The Nikko Chapel is a multi-split level building situated on the northern end of San Vitores Road along Tumon Row. The Chapels alter consist of seamless glass curtain walls on three sides allowing a 180 degree view of the Pacific Ocean and the beaches below. The Chapel also consists with an assembly area, staff offices, waiting rooms, dressing rooms and restrooms.The concrete structure consists of the preformed curved metal panel roof cladding, stone veneer wall finish, tinted glazing and glass curtain walls, wood and marble floor finishes, controlled lighting and electrical system and HVAC system.

IRONWOOD HEIGHTS PHASE I & II
Phase 1 provides for 72 affordable home located in Ypao Road. A mix of one-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bedrooms units with required accessible units and parking are distributed among 4 buildings. The complex will have a Management Office, Gazebo and play yard for its residences. Phase 2 will provide an additional 3 buildings that will have a mix of two and three bedroom units. The buildings are designed with a local flavor which includes a band with latte stone pilasters at the corners, exterior stairs and metal roof.Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical and all material finishes are included in the scope of work.

LONG TERM CARE FACILITY
This 60-Bed facility provides skilled nursing andintermediate care with related ancillary services, as a satellite of the Guam Hospital. It also includes the Institute of Aging, a research group dealing with ALS/Parkinsons Disease and other aging-related illnesses. The design solution is a split-level concept with patient related functions at the lower courtyard level and administrative/research functions at the upper level. The patient rooms are laid out in an efficient T corridor configuration monitored by a central nurse station. Patient services wrap around the central courtyard. Theorientation of the design takes advantage of northern light and dramatic north and eastern views. The facility is nestled into the hillside and entry is made at the upper floor administrative level. From there, visitors may proceed down and across the Link to the nursing unit and patient rooms. Service deliveries are made to the lower level so there is a minimal necessity to transfer materials vertically.

PIC CHAPEL
The beachside Chapel at PIC was completed in 2006. Taniguchi Ruth Makio Architects worked in association with Japanese architect JYUKAN for the design, construction documents, and construction administration.The Chapel is housed in a graceful arched building set in a reflecting pool. The altar is placed in front of full height windows showcasing Tumon Bay. Flanking the chapel is the bride and groom preparation rooms and a lounge and two banquet rooms.

SANDY BEACH HOMES
Sandy Beach Homes is an apartment building consisting of 60 three-bedroom, two-bathroom units measuring 1,400 sq. ft. each. It stands seven stories on an ocean-front property in Chalan Kanoa, Saipan.Energy savings features and a convenient location in the heart of the village are the highlights of Sandy Beach Homes. Dwelling units were designed to incorporate contemporary, energy-saving design in both architecture amenities and home features. A rooftop solar water heater is provided for each unit.Sandy Beach Homes was built with the vision of enhancing family living standards in the Northern Marianas community. The mission is to provide a modern home in the heart of a lively commercial district in Saipan, with features and amenities that will help families live comfortably as they work to improve their way of life.

SHERATON LAGUNA RESORT
The Sheraton Laguana Resort is a conversion of the original Palace Hotel. TRMA, was the architect for the Palace Hotel which was built in 1988. Working closely with Kanko Kikaku Sekkeisha, the clients interior designer and landscape architect, the hotel was re-imaged as a five-star Sheraton.The resort is organized around a water theme with new lagoon pools, water features, waterfalls, and an infinity-edge swimming pool. The water theme is carried into the hotel where a series of pools and fountains define the 11-story central atrium.Public areas were upgraded and remodeled and the original 409 guest rooms were renovated and in some cases combined into suites for a new total of 319 guest rooms. The existing restaurants were rethemed.The conversion design and construction were fast-tracked over a ten month period with construction completed and the hotel opened for business five months after operations ceased for the Palace Hotel. For separate clients, an Angsana Spa was completed and a new Wedding Chapel integrated into the resort hotels lagoons and pools. Built atop a rugged shoreline bluff, the 40-seat chapel has a spectacular 300-degree view of the coastline and ocean skyline.

SHERATON CHAPEL
The Sheraton Laguna White Arrow Chapel was completed in 2006. Taniguchi Ruth Makio Architects worked in association with the Japanese Design Consultant JYUKAN, Inc. for design, construction documents and construction administration.The all-glass Chapel with steel framing is set in a reflecting pool atop Oka Point with a man-made lagoon and the Sheraton Laguna Hotel behind. As one enters the chapel , the altars backdrop is a picturesque view of the Philippine Sea. The Chapel on the main level has seating capacity for 48 people as well as a Bride and Grooms preparation rooms, Lounge and Banquet Rooms located below.
